飛機撞鳥

今天早上一打開電腦就看到飛機撞鳥墜河的新聞，而且還發生在我以前念書的地方：紐約。還好無人傷亡，紐約現在天寒地凍呢，看我朋友的部落格，他們十月就開始穿大衣，最近經常飄雪，在這種天氣裡掉到Hudson River是多麼可怕的場景，光想就冷起來了。真的還好，無人傷亡。CNN因為這個事件的關係，訪問了生物學家Richard Dolbeer，他在訪問過程裡提到現在的鳥類必需要和飛機競爭飛行空間(Birds compete for airspace with planes)，所以像這樣鳥和飛機相撞的事情經常發生(但不見得會有傷亡)。只是像這樣飛機的兩個引擎一次就被鳥撞壞是比較少見。CNN記者請Dolbeer列舉幾件鳥和飛機相撞的大事，以下是其中一件：

Last March in Oklahoma City, a business jet was taking off and it struck a flock of white pelicans, which is another species which is increasing. It crashed into a wood lot and killed all five businesspeople aboard.

• struck: strike的過去式，撞上
• a flock of: 一群
• pelican: 鵜鵠，保育類動物的一種，很多年以前茱莉亞羅伯茲和丹佐華盛頓演的一部電影就叫作《鵜鵠檔案》(The Pelican Brief》，當時的中譯片名叫《絕對機密》。(我其實已經忘記片子在演什麼了，只記得茱莉亞羅伯茲一直跑來跑去，然後車子被炸掉。)
• a wood lot: 林地

這個句子比較難一點，關代裡面還有關代，white pelicans後的關代子句, which is another species which is increasing.這一句形容的是white pelicans，而第二個關代子句which is increasing則形容another species.

中譯：

去年在奧克拉荷馬市(Oklahoma City)，一架小型私人飛機在起飛時撞上一群白鵜鵠，這是另一種數量正大量增加的鳥類(相對於鵜鵠)。私人飛機最後撞上林地，機上的五個商人也全部喪生。

Steve Jobs休病假了

讓Apple起死回生的頭頭Steve Jobs要休病假了，還一休休半年，這在經濟不景氣的當下，不知道會對apple的業務有多大的影響。CNN 新聞裡說Jobs因為荷爾蒙失調(hormone imbalance)的關係，體重掉了不少，我本來看了很羨慕，可是看了新聞相片，決定還是不要羨慕好了。Jobs以前雖然胖一點，可是容光煥發比較帥氣(成功男子的氣魄吧),像這一張 ，不過新聞裡纖瘦的Job看起來蒼老很多，像這一張。

希望他趕快好起來，iPod是我最愛的影音產品，我還期待apple繼續給我驚喜。

• deep bench: 好手很多。從棒球球賽過來的用語，指這個球隊除了上場打球的好手以外，還有許多其他的好手坐在板凳上等著下場，所以板凳很深(deep bench)。
• Cook: Tim Cook是apple原來的COO(Chief Operating Officer, 營運長)，Jobs請病假時，由他暫代Jobs的職位。

中譯：對投資人來說，在星期三(蘋果Macworld的發表會上)宣布這件事情實在很讓人沮喪。Seyrafi(紐約Calyon證券分析師)認為就在Jobs說只要在飲食上面有一點小改變就可以治好他的健康問題沒多久後，就發布了這個消息。但是Seyrafi補充說Apple裡面還是有很多執行營運好手，Cook就是其中一個夠格的領導者。 

無名指決定你賺多少錢

這是今天在BBC登出來的新聞，劍橋大學科學家研究倫敦市內的期貨交易員發現，無名指(ring finger)比食指(index finger)長的交易員賺最多錢。他們以前就發現無名指比食指長的人，容易在競爭性運動上有好表現。這可能是跟睪丸素(testosterone)在子宮裡暴露的量有關，暴露越多，一個人的侵略性越強，越有可能成功囉。想賺錢的人，趕快看看你的無名指有多長吧。(至於我的無名指，唉，很短很短....)

make good decisions

CNN今天登出一篇文章，談到大腦為什麼有時候會做出一些壞決定。文章看下來，我覺得有點老生常談。文章裡說科學家研究出人做決定時有兩個系統：直覺(intuition)和推理(reasoning)。兩者沒有絕對好絕對壞，只是人做錯誤決定時，會忽略掉一些環境因素(situational factors)，結果才會那麼糟糕。(這不是廢話嗎？我要知道的是怎麼樣不會忽略環境因素，要怎麼樣才能讓直覺和推理有比較好的平衡。看來，這個問題還是得靠自己解決，不能期待科學家幫我想出辦法。)

回到今天的每日一句，文章裡談到雖然很多人靠直覺做出決定，但是有些重大決定還是要靠精密計算(careful calculation)比較穩妥：

gut是內臟，但口語上可以當「勇氣」來使用，通常會用複數guts。我們總不會希望自己的勇氣只有一點點。文章裡的gut judgment則是「大膽的決定」。

retirement portfolio：退休投資組合，portfolio本來指的是檔案夾，在電腦還沒有出現之前，一般人購買證券、債券等投資產品是有一張張的憑證，而這些憑證都會放到檔案夾裡收起來，所以portfolio就引申出來變成投資組合。

整句話的中譯：關於(做決定時的)準確度，主要是和該決定的性質有關。比方說在選擇我個人退休金的股票組合時，我可不會靠我個人的蠻勇來決定。

每日一句: Tobacco Hazard Preventi...

禁煙法實施第一天，很多人被罰款。我其實覺得這是蠻莫名其妙的一件事，我現在雖然不抽煙，也不喜歡吸二手煙，但只要不干擾到我，別人喜歡怎麼樣是別人的事，我不會管。為什麼要立法限制所有的地方都不能抽煙，有些人就是喜歡做吸煙者的生意不行嗎？有些人就是喜歡吸煙吸到死不行嗎？(人應該要有選擇如何生活、如何死亡的自由吧。)只要那些抽煙的人都待在指定吸煙商店或區域，不會干擾到我，那管別人家裡做什麼呢？台灣不是號稱自由國家嗎？為什麼連寬容面對不同人的雅量都沒有呢？(其實我想只是政府缺錢吧。)  

回到我們今天的每日一句，一個相片沖印店老闆因為沒將禁止吸煙的告示貼出來而被開單的反應。

The owner said the government was "stealing [his] money," adding that had the government given him a sticker or sign he would be in the wrong for not putting it up, but the government had no right to ask him to buy a sign.

相片沖印店的老闆認為政府是在偷他的錢，adding以分詞的形式再帶入一個子句，此子句以that開頭。如果不好理解的話，可以想像這句話是The owner said ........and added that ......，可以在這裡去掉and，加上逗點，再把added變成adding。

adding that後的子句，我們再獨立來看：

had the government given him a sticker or sign he would be in the wrong for not putting it up, but the government had no right to ask him to buy a sign.

這是had開頭的句子，很容易就想到是省略if，再將had倒裝的假設句，原句應為：

If the government had given him a sticker or sign, he would be in the wrong for not putting it up, but the government had no right to ask him to buy a sign.

中譯為：如果政府有給他貼紙(sticker)或是告示的話，他應該要為沒將貼紙或告示張貼出來而受罰，但政府沒有權力要求他買告示。
