corporatocracy

Ultimately, then, I became convinced that we encourage this system because the corporatocracy has convinced us that God has given us the right to place a few of our people at the very top of this capitalist pyramid and to export our system to the entire world.
來源:Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

  • ultimately: (adv.)最後
  • capitalist: (n.)資本主義
  • pyramid: (n.)

I took advantage of my time alone there to ponder these matters and to write about them in a journal. I wandered the streets of that city, handed money to beggars, and attempted to engage lepers, prostitutes, and street urchins in conversation.
來源:Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

  • take advantage of: 利用
  • ponder: (v.)深思
  • journal: (n.) 日記
  • wander: (v.)閒晃
  • beggar: (n.)乞討者
  • leper: (n.)麻瘋病患者
  • prostitute: (n.)娼妓
  • urchin: (n.)頑童

中譯:
我利用我一個人在那裡的時間思考這些問題並將思考結果紀錄在一本日誌上。我在那個城市(Bandung)的街道裡隨意行走,送錢給乞丐並且試圖與麻瘋病患、妓女和街頭頑童聊天。

an inquisitor

上次提到的《Confession of an Economic Hit man》,作者John Perkins因為工作關係,在印尼拜訪很多人。他一開始只覺得大家好像不太願意與他分享訊息,但之後他與印尼人做朋友,學習了印尼官方語言,他開始以不同的眼光看待印尼,他深入到一般陋巷,看到印尼人的真正生活,那些破敗的房屋到處可見卻是他以前不知不覺就忽視沒看到的。也因為學會了印尼官方語言,他更理解印尼人是如何看待他的。比方說,不管他到那裡,翻譯者都介紹他為「inquisitor」和「interrogator」。inquisitor在一般的英漢字典只是「詢問者」,但在Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English裡寫道意思 為:「someone who is asking you a lot of difficult questions and making you feel very uncomfortable」,而interrogator 則是:「to ask someone a lot of questions for a long time in order to get information, sometimes using threats(詭計)」,作者由此可知做這個工作的自己是多麼不受歡迎。

For example, when they introduced me to each other, they often used Bahasa terms that according to my dictionary translated to inquisitor and interrogator. I purposely neglected disclosing my knowlede of their language - even my translator knew only that I could recite a few stock phrases.
來源:Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

  • Bahasa: (n.)印尼官方用語
  • inquisitor: (n.)詰問者
  • interrogator: (n.)審問者
  • purposely: (adv.)刻意地
  • neglect: (v.)忽略
  • disclose: (v.)透露
  • recite: (v.)背頌
  • stock phrases: 慣用語

中譯:
比方說,當他們把我介紹給對方時,根據我的字典,他們經常使用印尼話裡的「詰問者」和「審問者」來形容我。我刻意將我對印尼話的知識隱藏起來,甚至我的翻譯者以為我只會說一些慣用語。
