It may surprise some modern filmmakers to learn that the tide of professional opinion in the 1920s did not universally swing in favor of the transformation to sound. Many believed that it would be a temporary fad, one that would disappear, as had other attempts at technical innovation, including a push in the 1910s to add recordings of in accompaniment with moving pictures.

When their research resulted in the development of greatly improved sound techniques, film studios fell in line to support the conversion to the use of sound in films.
