corporatocracy

Ultimately, then, I became convinced that we encourage this system because the corporatocracy has convinced us that God has given us the right to place a few of our people at the very top of this capitalist pyramid and to export our system to the entire world.
來源:Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

  • ultimately: (adv.)最後
  • capitalist: (n.)
  • pyramid: (n.)

I took advantage of my time alone there to ponder these matters and to write about them in a journal. I wandered the streets of that city, handed money to beggars, and attempted to engage lepers, prostitutes, and street urchins in conversation.
來源:Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

  • take advantage of: 利用
  • ponder: (v.)深思
  • journal: (n.) 日記
  • wander: (v.)
  • beggar: (n.)
  • leper: (n.)
  • prostitute: (n.)
  • urchin: (n.)

an inquisitor

上次提到的《Confession of an Economic Hit man》,作者John Perkins因為工作關係,在印尼拜訪很多人。 inquisitor在一般的英漢字典只是「詢問者」,但在Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English裡寫道意思 為:「someone who is asking you a lot of difficult questions and making you feel very uncomfortable」,而interrogator 則是:「to ask someone a lot of questions for a long time in order to get information, sometimes using threats(詭計)」,作者由此可知做這個工作的自己是多麼不受歡迎。

For example, when they introduced me to each other, they often used Bahasa terms that according to my dictionary translated to inquisitor and interrogator. I purposely neglected disclosing my knowlede of their language - even my translator knew only that I could recite a few stock phrases.
來源:Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

  • Bahasa: (n.)
  • inquisitor: (n.)
  • interrogator: (n.)審問者
  • purposely: (adv.)
  • neglect: (v.)忽略
  • disclose: (v.)透露
  • recite: (v.)

nature's call

An elderly man had descended the bank, dropped his pants, and squatted at the edge of the water to answer nature's call. The young woman saw him but was undeterred; she continued bathing.
來源:Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

  • hit man: 殺手
  • descend: (v.)下來
  • squat: (v.)
  • undeterred: (v.)

carpet vs. rug

至於以功能性來說的話,carpet總是放在地上(on the floor),但rug的功能性就比較大,除了可以裝飾地板以外,可以掛在牆上(hang a rug on the wall),放在床上(lay a rug across a bed)或是直接放在另一條carpet上,讓室內裝飾更有趣(liven up the décor)。

(It's attach to the floor),而rug就是一個比較小的織品(a weave),使用處比較廣泛,不見得只放在地上。

It's six of one, half dozen of the other. dozen是12, 12的一半是6,所以不論是six或是half dozen都是一樣的東西,也就是「沒差」。 Either one is okay. It's six of one, half dozen of the other.

在Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English的定義裡,nerd是「someone who seems only interested in computers and other technical things - used to show disapproval [= geek];geek則為someone who is not popular because they wear unfashionable clothes, do not know how to behave in social situations, or do strange things [= nerd]。

Wikipedia對nerd的解釋是「a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests rather than engaging in more social or popular activities. geek的解釋是「a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc.。

But after chewing the fruit and rubbing the pulp against the tongue, the berry, known by a promising name -- "miracle fruit" or Synsepalum dulcificum -- releases a sweetening potency that alters the taste buds.
來源:CNN

  • rub: (v.)
  • pulp: (n.)果肉
  • promising: (adj.)
  • sweeten: (v.)
  • potency: (n.)效力
  • alter: (v.)改變
  • bud: (n.)

But the shift has helped yellow cabs and appears to have made up for lost business as tourism and air travel have slumped and the disposable income of ordinary New Yorkers has dwindled.

  • shift: (n.)移轉
  • cab: (n.)
  • make up for: 補償
  • slump: (v.)
  • dwindle: (v.)

現在狀況這麼差,債權人當然不想隨便掏錢出來,這兩家公司的債權人們就在星期天發出聲明說他們不願意將手上的現金換成債權和股票(not ready to agree to swap their current notes for a combination of new debt and stock),那GM和克萊斯勒該怎麼辦呢?

The two companies face a March 31 deadline to win concessions from bondholders and unions in order to prove to the Treasury Department that they can be viable in the long term. Without such a finding, the government can recall the $13.4 billion it has already lent to GM and the $4 billion it loaned to Chrysler.
來源:CNN

  • concession: (n.)讓步
  • bondholder: (n.)
  • Treasury Department: 財政部
  • viable: (n.)
  • recall: (v.)
